Associate Professor Warwick Hillier

(18 October 1967 – 10 January 2014)

A few remembrances from his friends and colleagues.

PDF version of the obituary (from Barry Osmond).

From Johannes Messinger:
Here is a picture of Warwick that I took last August when I visited him directly after the International Photosynthesis meeting.

From Chuck Dismukes:

Dear friends of Warwick,
We knew this sad day would come eventually, when we would have to say good-bye forever to our dear friend Warwick. He accepted his fatal illness with grace and good humor until the end, just as he had presented himself throughout life. His smile lingers in my mind when I recall my memories.

While working with him in Canberra and again in Princeton I got to experience that precious gift of sharing knowledge and discovery together that creates a bond that all scientists treasure. It is truly something special when nature reveals her secrets to us, especially when shared.

Warwick was passionate about nature. I recall after a working visit to my laboratory I gave him a thank you card with an underwater photograph of O2 “champagne bubbles” rising to the surface of Ewans Pond in Australia. Upon returning to Australia he trekked to this pond and filmed a movie of the still fizzing champagne of biological reactions.

Warwick inherited Tom Wydrzynski’s passion for science. It was moving to see the relationship they had and how each cared for the other.

He gave us so much – great science and eager sharing of it, love of his fellow man, a quirky sense of humor, and frequent laughter. I can still see his U shaped smile and bulging eyes peering at me ready to say, “let’s go find out if it works in the lab”

Rest in peace, my friend.
Chuck Dismukes
